On November 13 The first screening of the The Promised Land will take place in London in an event organised by Strange Attractor. The event will include a talk by Rod Dickinson - and a showing of another film related to a forthcoming project that - along with the Jonestown Reenactment will be the subject of an exhibition at the newly opened CCA galleries in Glasgow, Scotland early in 2002.
Full details of the Strange attractor screening and talk can be found on their website. This event will take place at the Horse Hospital in Russell Square, London.
The Promised Land reenactment was a reconstruction of one of Jim Jones' powerful political and religious sermons from the mid nineteen seventies. This included a reconstruction of a 'miracle healing' that was performed many times during the sermons.
Actor Graeme Edler portrayed Jim Jones. He was supported by a small number of other Jonestown Reenactment participants.
This first reenactment was surrounded by controversy drummed up by that ever reductive institution; the british media, who were intent on misunderstanding our motives.
The Archive of this reenactment is now online:
The re-enactment will continue in a day long event in a public park in London, UK which will reconstruct other elements of Temple life with hundreds of reenactors supplemented by a Living History Display, a narration and other events. The day will conclude with 'White Nights' a reenactment of the last few hours of the Peoples Temple, culminating in the suicide and death scene at Jonestown.
