The Jonestown Re-enactment

reliving the past... to survive the future

This list is typical of the hundreds of documents that Jones and loyal Temple members compiled on the congregation.

The list includes personal information retrieved from a search through the subjects garbage, and information passed on by other loyal Temple members.

Typically the list would be used to give Jones information for use during a healing or sermon, where he would feign personal 'channeled' knowledge about the subject/Temple member. Giving the impression that he was receiving divine knowledge about them.

Jones often used this technique in combination with a cancer healing, as we did in The Promised Land Reenactment.

Ex Temple members have stated that these deceptions were ethically overlooked by many Temple members because they were seen as a way of engaging and recruiting new members into the Peoples Temple: People who would have been immediately suspicious of the Temples underlying communalist ideology (pitched as it was against the basic tenets of American capitalism), but who might accept it and welcome it over time.

For a moving and alternative view of how Jones and the Temple did indeed dramatically and positively affect the lives of those he encountered, see:
