reliving the past... to survive the future

Notes on the script: The Promised Land

The words that we used on May 26 are words that Jim Jones and members of the People Temple spoke over 25 years ago.

The script has been compiled from segments taken from transcripts and tapes of Sermons that were held first in the Redwood Valley Church, California and later in San Francisco and Los Angeles, after the Peoples Temple had expanded their church into these cities.

Many of Jones' sermons lasted for several hours, engaging the micro-politics of both the San Francisco scene and the Temple membership. The segments you will hear tonight portray more fundamental aspects of the Temple theology and the methodology of the healing sessions, that Jones became famous for.

The Sermons date from 1971 to 1974, at a time when the Temple was expanding, and trumpeted by many west coast political and religious figures as a powerful social force for good in the community.

San Francisco Mayor George Moscone said of Jones: "Your contributions to the spiritual health and well-being of our community have been truly inestimable...you have demonstrated that the unique powers of spiritual energy and civic commitment are virtually boundless, and that our lives would be sadly diminished without your continuing contributions."

Jones was meticulous about recording meetings and sermons of the Peoples Temple throughout their existence. The Department of State hold hundreds of hours of their recordings. The segments used tonight are among them. The tapes are coded by number, and include;
Q952
Q206
Q243
Q953
Q921
Q612
Q1016

Phrases have been used from other sermons, mostly for continuity.

The Jonestown Reenactment would also like to credit Rebecca Moore and Fielding M. McGehee III for transcriptions of many of the segments used here. The transcripts can be found on their scholarly and extensive web site about The Peoples Temple and Jonestown:
